New national recreational trail designated along Colorado River

Trail

The 76-mile long Mohave Water Trail lies entirely within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

The Laughlin-Bullhead City area officially has a new 76-mile-long recreation trail.

The Mohave Water Trail, which stretches along the Arizona and Nevada shorelines of Lake Mohave and the Colorado River below Davis Dam to Laughlin-Bullhead, is one of 30 new national recreation trails in 25 states.

Interior Secretary David Bernhardt designated the trail Thursday during a visit to Lake Mead.

“I encourage Americans to get outside, enjoy our incredible public lands and visit a nearby national recreation trail. Spanning more than 83,000 miles, larger than the interstate highway system, the National Trails System provides easy access to a wide variety of outdoor experiences,” Bernhardt said in a statement.

The Mohave Water Trail connects to sandy beaches, scenic desert areas and historic sites, including submerged cultural resources.

The 30 new trails announced Thursday add more than 1,275 miles to the National Trails System. These are in addition to the 370 miles of national recreation trails that were designated in 2018.

The  National Recreation Trails program is jointly administered by the National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service, in conjunction with other federal and nonprofit partners.
